The Nothing
The void-prison of banished gods & feral demons
A lightless otherworld the dungeon uses as an oubliette, where defeated or inconvenient deities, feral minor demons and whole banished locations are exiled. Passage is one-way: things fall in and cannot climb out, except through rare artifacts like the Gate of the Feral Gods or, it seems, when a former inmate strays near an entrance. The lesser deity Psamathe was banished here for an affair with a mortal king; the feral-demon harem that hunts her is imprisoned here too. By Floor Eight, Signet’s old hint that it touches the All Tree (the world-spanning trunk that connects every realm) explains why its entrances can open in unlikely places, including the gambling halls of the Desperado Club.
Book 4 appearances
- Chapter 21 — The Winding Box can banish an entire place, the necropolis, into the Nothing.
- Chapter 34 — The demon Slit is loosed from the Nothing into the Lacuna, screaming for Samantha.
