The Winding Box
Gate piece 3 of 3 · banishes a place to the Nothing
The third component of the Gate of the Feral Gods: a heavy, old wooden case like a humidor or music box, with a glass window, two knobs and two cradles, one for each mirrored watch. With the two watches seated and wound, it opens the Gate; Ghazi cracked a way to use the box alone to banish a whole location into the Nothing, his intended fail-safe against the possessed ghost. Carl punches Ghazi out and steals it, putting two of the three pieces in his hands: the box plus Kane's watch, with only Henrik's watch, lost in the flooded tomb, still missing.
Book 4 appearances
- Chapter 21 — Carl steals it from Ghazi’s burning lab: the council’s letter inside reveals it can banish the necropolis to the Nothing.
- Chapter 22 — A note looted from the dead mage finally explains how to work it.
