The Backstage Death Maze

A floor nobody was ever supposed to reach. Menerva runs the NPCs building and occupying it on the seventeenth floor, and they have spent hundreds of seasons training against the impossible case of crawlers getting that far — which is why Growler Gary, plucked from there when the AI wore his body as an avatar, was so far above level. The whole floor is built into the dungeon and invisible to the showrunners, who are content that a box is ticked. Herot is not backstage with them: he is on the far side of the portal, in the Pineapple Cabaret.

• Chapter 55 — Carl works out that Menerva is on the seventeenth floor in charge of the NPCs building and occupying it, that Growler Gary's elevated level came from being taken out of there, and that the whole floor has been ignored for hundreds of seasons.
