The Beast of Burden Sin
A wheel showing nine symbols Carl could not read — a squiggle, a lightning bolt, an ox, some bubbles and more — appeared in the middle of the apartment-complex lobby where the final heats were staged, spun, and stopped on the ox to a clang like the world's biggest gong. A second wheel then appeared in front of each eligible target, mostly green with a small sliver of red, to decide who the attack actually touched: Donut's, Jamal's and Samantha's landed green, and Carl's landed red. The System named the result the Beast of Burden Sin — a level-20 Transformation, temporary because it fell among the first four attacks, lasting until a crawler passes through a stairwell and six hours for NPCs and everyone else. Carl blacked out for a few seconds and woke as a long-haired dachshund, with quadruped-incompatible items force-unequipped into his inventory, stats altered by the new form, a new Quadruped actions menu, an overwhelming sense of smell, and a System aside about his uncured Slugpox. Elle McGibbons became a goblin, Jacobus a starfish, and Chris Andrews 2 a werewolf stuck in its human form. Prepotente, Jurgen, Osvaldo and Dwight came through unchanged, and no mount appeared to have been hit at all.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 81 — The nine-symbol wheel stopped on the ox, the per-target wheels went green for Donut, Jamal and Samantha and red for Carl, and the System announced a level-20 Transformation that dropped him unconscious for seconds and woke him as a quadruped with items unequipped and a new actions menu.
- Chapter 82 — The roll call came in over chat: Elle a goblin, Jacobus a starfish, Chris a werewolf in human form, Carl a long-haired dachshund; Prepotente and Jurgen were protected by his Apito memorial crystal, the Ysalte crystal did not protect Osvaldo, and no mount appeared to have been affected.
