Bruna the Slaughter Gnu

Team Flamengo's biological mount, and carries spell protection an ordinary mount does not get. Carl reads her as a heavily armored six-legged wildebeest crossed with a triceratops, throwing little sparks with every step and wearing a giant double saddle spiked and glowing with enchantment. The System's readout calls Slaughter Gnus hardy and deceptively fast, able to scale vertical surfaces, with hide tough enough for this floor.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 40 — Walks up to the starting block carrying Osvaldo, Filipe L on the reins, and a dwarf mercenary with a crossbow in a little basket.
• Chapter 50 — The gnu team is stopped cold by Lucia's brick wall, then has to angle around the collapsed loop track, surfacing well behind Carl's truck alongside the Lady Dominators.
• Chapter 63 — Rushes ahead off the line as the heat sprints for the factory entrance, fast enough that Carl abandons the idea of following her and swerves left in behind the Dominators' GTO instead.
• Chapter 67 — The giant gnu comes through the heat with Osvaldo, who dismounts and pats her side.
• Chapter 73 — Osvaldo and Filipe pull up next to Carl's truck astride the gnu, with whatever upgrade they bought after the last race giving no outward sign.
• Chapter 74 — She dives and tumbles past Carl's truck out of the duct, then sprouts wings and glides down like a pegasus.
• Chapter 80 — Bruna stepped out of the garage toward the starting line with Osvaldo sitting stubbornly on her back, the last of Team Flamengo, and at the blocks she stood on the far side of Dwight from Carl's truck.
• Chapter 82 — The cannon on Dwight's vine, blocked on Carl's side and redeployed to the other, fired point-blank into Bruna's already-raised shield; she staggered, then fully recovered, and Osvaldo removed her shield entirely to stack the protection on himself.
• Chapter 83 — Osvaldo abandons his slaughter gnu with a grenade, a dose of poison and a string of poison dart bombs meant to finish her, because the containment rules only let him finish on foot once his mount is dead; a liquid drop shield, an explosion blanket, a smoke curtain, Donut's shield, conjured trees and half a dozen emergency gremlins keep her alive.
• Chapter 87 — Donut stops on the way to the truck to ask whether the gnu is back in her garage; Carl tells her Bruna is still on the track and will be until the race is over, which is what sends Donut after the other two mounts instead.
