Carl Summons Scolopendra
The gambit the whole parade was cover for. The arena's rules give Carl two choices to make about his stand-ins, and for the first he names Scolopendra — which turns out to be the dungeon's own last boss, a tier the System had never announced because nobody had ever reached it. The AI is contemptuous and obliging in equal measure: rules are rules, and it summons the thing to the eleventh floor on Carl's request while telling him and the twenty-two others who agreed to the plan that this takes the prize among suicidal gambits. Twenty-four portraits go up against a level 235 floor boss and a level 500 Dungeon boss, and the terms are laid out — kill it and the timers, the collapses and the deals all end while the Ascendency battles begin; abandon it and the exit is gone. Either way the remaining seven of its nine attacks trigger, which is the one detail the crawlers had feared and now have confirmed. Carl calls Plan C.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 93 — Carl spends his first stand-in choice on Scolopendra from the moving truck, moments after telling the galaxy the crawlers are done playing by the dungeon's rules.
- Chapter 94 — The boss enters to a calm, glitch-free announcement; the AI lays out every rule change a kill would cause, confirms the nine-attack trap, and Carl switches to Plan C.
