Demon Eviction
The System mechanic that fires when too much death piles up in one place: Sheol “overflows” and demons are involuntarily ejected upward, falling like rain. Any recently-fallen or weak-minded shell (a zombie, a fresh corpse) can be randomly possessed. An evicted demon is nothing like a ghost possession: the body it grabs is doomed to destruction, and the demon claws its way home only by dragging an extra living soul down through a portal, killing both. Mordecai explains it normally fires at the END of the ninth floor as setup for the Celestial Ascendency, and will pop off earlier and earlier each floor down, especially in big battles. On Floor Eight it triggers the earliest in crawl history, the AI ruling that crab sperm counts as a mob, turning Cuba's Chowder War into the quest “Hell Comes to Crawler Town.” Counter-rules: behead or pocket every kill, stay away from weak undead, never heal a demon-possessed shell, and never teleport one (that frees the demon at full power).
Book 6 appearances
- Chapter 54 — Triggered on the Cuban coast as the Chowder War’s mutual slaughter overflows Sheol; demons begin possessing zombie seals, crabs and fish.
- Chapter 55 — Dozens of full-power Sheol demons (Azireth, Yuguleth, Petty Demon Pleasure Valets) are freed when shells are teleported, raining across the live-announced boss battle.
- Chapter 56 — Demon-possessed crabs and seals grapple combatants into ground portals throughout the fight, killing both shell and victim.
- Chapter 58 — Escalates as a true Demon Prince, Amayon, possesses the boss-level Madre de Aguas: the dreaded “boss-level zombie during an eviction” scenario.
- Chapter 61 — The worldwide rules clarify: zombie-demons need one soul and close instantly; full demons open a wide, minute-long Sheol portal needing two souls, and a naked crawler caught in one survives, losing only worn gear.
- Chapter 62 — Amayon’s own home-portal (a region-wide soul tithe) becomes the “Where the Sidewalk Ends” quest.
- Chapter 66 — The eviction’s catastrophe pays off: the snake-shell drops to free a full demon prince, kicking off the Missing Piece final boss.
