Eris's Offer
Recruitment pitch · Hungry Eyes Village
Eris freezes a street of Hungry Eyes Village and offers Carl a way out of the Emberus problem: ditch the fire god, worship her truly, and she will shield him from the spite and help kill Emberus, Hellik and her own half brother in turn. What she wants is the Ascendent throne, and if she takes it she says she can send his friends to safety, carry him to the surface, or rebuild his world. Three conditions come with it. Make peace with Warlord Akuma and his war mages, who really can crack the Pineapple Cabaret open. Worship her for real rather than going through the motions. And let her damage him first, the way a wall is sanded before it is painted.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 35 — Eris says she will tell Carl when to switch, refuses to accept a worship offer made under panic, and warns that true faith requires a crucible first.
- Chapter 36 — Carl writes the whole pitch down before it fades and works out that he may now have to kill Eris as well as Emberus.
- Chapter 71 — Donut points out that Carl could simply worship the goddess, who has promised to fix everything if he does. He does not answer aloud, but privately reads the offer as a trap: what she wants is not worship but true devotion, even if her underlying idea was right.
