Gingers

Pale, slightly pudgy humanlike mobs the System labels Gingers, lifted from the never-built seventh floor and redressed as cannibals to suit the jungle. They wear only loincloths and crude carved wooden masks, carry plain spears and hide shields, and throw themselves at passing vehicles by the thousand without any regard for their own survival. The System claims they originate on Earth as a product of alien interference and suspects the Nullians were involved, credits them with the power to draw a soul out through eye contact, and notes they are immune to electricity and acid but soft against heat and cold. Two settlements, north and south, are at war.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 43 — The cannibals drop out of the canopy in their thousands and burst against the truck's shield, screech at Donut's Torch, and mass a hundred deep on a skeleton-hung arch before she sweeps them off it; the System's mob description then delivers a long, self-aware riff on stereotyping them.
• Chapter 44 — The piranhas are measured against them — the fish stick and sizzle on the shield rather than bursting — and Hedy pulls a bloodied tuft of red hair out of the truck's front bumper at the pit stop.
• Chapter 50 — Hundreds queue on the concrete and float the river in inner tubes; frozen in place by the ice, they are cut apart by the dragged weapon chain and drilled through by the shrews, and the quest notice needles the team for overkill.
