Character · debuts Book 8, Chapter 34 — “Team Helix, Triple Price”
Quemada
Fire fairy mercenary · Emberus worshipper
A level 96 fire fairy hired with team Helix as Carl's protection, about the size of Donut, with wings of smoke, a thick Spanish accent, and heat enough to smoulder a cape where she rests her hand. She worships Emberus, and the moment she sees the shrine bubbling in Carl's safe room she triples her squad's fee. Her reason arrives later: their lord sent her a vision instructing her to aid a fellow worshipper who races, she is certain the attempt on Hellik will kill them all, and the inflated fee is meant to buy Olga and Finley time away from the track.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 34 — Quemada arrives with team Helix, fixes on the Emberus shrine at the back of the room, and raises the price from double to triple; Carl agrees on the spot.
- Chapter 35 — On the walk into Hungry Eyes Village she tells Carl about her vision, calls him brother, and describes their coming martyrdom against Hellik as a comfort; Carl tells her they are not ready.
- Chapter 36 — She keeps talking Emberus and martyrdom at Carl's shoulder, entirely oblivious to the goddess who has just come and gone; Elle takes one look at her and says fire fairies cannot be trusted.
- Chapter 41 — Quemada settles hot on Carl's shoulder during the pre-race briefing and starts sobbing that she no longer knows what is real, or whether any of it matters.
