Lore · debuts Book 8, Chapter 63 — “Into the Screw Factory”

The Coblyn Corporation

Worldbuilding · the knockers' conglomerate

The company the knockers built after the Corporatocracy running the mines took their caves for the minerals underneath. Too weak to fight and with nowhere to go, they started manufacturing high-grade drugs and selling them to the miners; the mine operators outlawed everything they did not sell themselves, vilified the knockers, tried to eradicate them and lost, because a war on drugs is a war on the impulse to find comfort. Flush with money, the knockers incorporated, bought up legitimate businesses, milled the ore from their own land into product, and branched into toys, skateboards and fidget spinners. It was not enough — they had grown as addicted to the earnings as their customers were to the goods. Shut out of the legal pharmaceutical market and watching their doll line sell, they went into cocaine for toddlers, and bought cut-rate elemental magic to guard the secret. Both of the factory's monster problems trace back to that purchase. The System's own write-up declines to draw a lesson from any of it.
