The boss of the fourth heat, hidden among the hundreds of gingers floating the lazy river with a captive engineer as the prize for killing him. Each heat drew its own version: Imani's team faced an orangutan in the slums, while Carl's was a huge, entirely hairless man with an ogre's build, still human. He had one arm free and was mid-cast when the zipper shrews Donut had summoned came at him from the front of the field and drilled a dozen holes through him at once, unpeeling him across the ice. The quest completed, but his engineer was destroyed with him and then run over by the weapon chain Carl was dragging.

• Chapter 50 — Somewhere in the inner tubes with the engineer he was guarding; Donut spots him bald and mid-spell, and the summoned shrews take him apart from behind before he can finish casting.
