Heat Three
The third heat, run down a straight asphalt track a hundred metres wide that drops away like a ski ramp at roughly thirty degrees, under a red alien sun with grassland to the horizon on both sides. Thirty kilometres in twenty minutes, seven teams starting side by side in the order they placed in the last race, each sealed in a starting block shield for the first ninety seconds. The track is shared with a migration of sugar hermits arriving in four waves, and the finish line is blocked by the skull of Tem. The Royal Court of Princess Donut takes first, with Team Sparkles second, the Lady Dominators and the Gimp third, Team Free Love fourth and One Fine Pig fifth; sixth place is left empty pending a replacement team, and the Wild Hunt and the Jugglers are eliminated with all members dead.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 30 — Called to the starting line with five minutes' warning; the grid runs Sparkles, the Jugglers, Free Love, the Wild Hunt, the Lady Dominators, One Fine Pig and the Royal Court at the far end, in last race's finishing order.
- Chapter 31 — Green light, thirty kilometres to cover in twenty minutes, and by the time the starting block shields lapse the Royal Court is second behind a rocket-assisted Team Sparkles.
- Chapter 32 — Ends with three vehicles crossing the line airborne at once; the results board gives the Royal Court first, leaves sixth place empty, and lists both eliminated teams.
