The Casino Mimic Ambush

The line of antique chairs along the wall, the tables with no games on them, the slot machines, the chandeliers and most of the dancing NPCs were never furniture. Donut spots it a half-second early, backflips clear and releases Mongo, tripling him with Clockwork Triplicate; then every object in the room shifts, swells and opens an enormous jagged mouth. There are around fifty of them, levels 25 to 120, most near 80, and one of the guards along the back wall is in on it while the rest are as surprised as the crawlers and mostly run. A chandelier drops on a clockwork Mongo and swallows it whole before both explode. Carl, still a dachshund, tries to punch a table and instead scratches it with a stubby leg, then settles for chewing its leg off. Lucia turns into her skull-faced hag form and debuts a gold lasso whose loop is a portal, shearing a gambler-mimic in half; Elle fires an ice bolt down a slot machine's throat; Florin's shotgun works, Imani stupefies the room, and a Cruel Sepsis debuff withers a knot of chair mimics. The dead collapse into thin, armless grey humanoid forms with tentacle-like protuberances, the way changelings do. One crawler Carl does not know is savaged across the chest. Mimics are ambush predators, and once surprise is gone they die easily — leaving only Mitch.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 86 — Everything in the casino comes alive at Mitch's snapped fingers; the crawlers lose surprise as the deciding factor and clear roughly fifty mimics, ending with Mitch frozen by Carl's Eye and killed by Donut.
