Grigori the Placid

An elderly, tall NPC in a filth-caked robe who rides out the fifth heat in the back of the party's truck, bleeding from a scalp wound after the crash and apologising to Corcunda for never having asked, before the split, which god he worshipped. He is placid about the outcome, telling Donut that some believe death is only movement on to another plane and that Dong did not think it was the end. Samantha, who is convinced the party has been hiding him from her, corrects the word fleshmancer out of him: he introduces himself as Grigori the Placid, the most renowned flesh sculptor the dungeon has known. She promptly claims him for her own project, dragging him off to be examined properly and then to go looking for a compatible living body for her, with a candidate already picked out at a club in town.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 39 — First shown unnamed — a tall, thin human in flowing robes brought into the bar by Imani, Chris and Elle, hired as a mercenary and to be kept hidden in their guild until needed.
• Chapter 54 — The hired fleshmancer is finally named by an examine: Grigori the Placid, human, Level 93, a mercenary of Team Meadow Lark who worships Gula. He sits ramrod straight between Louis and Linus in blue flowing robes going grey with cookie crumbs, cappuccino in hand, flicking them off with obvious disdain. Elle rates him insufferable and plainly competent, and he has spent his time in her and Imani's safe room trading healing technique with Imani.
• Chapter 56 — Mercenary ownership of Grigori transfers to Carl and Donut's guild, and the man who sat rigid through the previous chapter appears to be enjoying himself once Donut makes him brush her. His first words in the party's hearing are a vote for the sunglasses.
• Chapter 58 — Carl tells Porky a fleshmancer is already waiting outside to run the ceremony, and that they have two hours to break Corky out of his garage before the race.
• Chapter 59 — Grigori walks the group through the rejoining he intends to attempt, unzipping both halves and keeping them alive while they are squished together for a joining spell, then admits he has never actually done it because halfsies rarely outlive Split Personality by more than minutes, and is mostly curious what two long-separated personalities become.
• Chapter 60 — Carl fixes his three race mercenaries: the fleshmancer, Porky, and Dong himself.
• Chapter 62 — Grigori, the tall human fleshmancer, sits stiffly in the rearmost seat looking green around the edges; Hedy reports he had not taken well to the driving lessons, and he asks Carl whether the whole event will be driven this fast when all Carl has done is coast to the line.
• Chapter 64 — Too busy dry-heaving into the deep fryer to take the driver's seat when Carl needs him to, but he still gets a cast off over the half-mantaur while wobbling on his feet, stripping the Strung Out debuff from both halves at once. He then tells the crew the suits have to come off immediately, and asks whether they really have to do it while moving.
• Chapter 65 — Runs the whole procedure upside down. He had already ruled that the guts may spill a little but the brains must stay sealed; on the ceiling he floats Porky's dangling guts clear, keeps both half-hearts beating, presses the half-skulls together for Dong to wrap, then casts the fusion in stages — initial cast, a wait for the parts to fuse, final cast — insisting the halves be held together throughout or it fails. He promises to fix any inconsistencies after the race and is sick twice more in the process.
• Chapter 66 — Thrown to the floor when the truck flips, bleeding freely from a scalp wound, he tells Corcunda he should have asked whether he worshipped a deity before the split and apologises for the oversight.
• Chapter 67 — He asks whether he is dreaming and whether he is really still alive, then stands to his full height in the back of the truck, hopelessly wiping at his filthy robe, and offers Donut the view that death is only movement on to another plane, which is what Dong believed.
• Chapter 68 — Samantha accuses the party of hiding him from her; he tells her he is no mere fleshmancer but Grigori the Placid, the most renowned flesh sculptor the dungeon has ever known, picks her out of the air to turn her over in his hands, says he needs to examine her properly and somewhere else, and lets her drag him into the safe room.
